HOW TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN BOUCLE AND WOOL

Boucle and Wool are two fabrics that are often confused with each other.

Both are used in clothing and furniture, and they can look quite similar.

In what follows, I will tell you how to distinguish between Boucle and Wool.

Before that, if you thought Boucle was Wool, you'd better read this article first: WHAT! BOUCLE IS NOT MADE OF WOOL?

MEHOTD-1: READ THE INGREDIENTS LIST

The most direct way to identify whether a product is made from Boucle or Wool is to read the ingredient list on the product's label.

Let's take a sweater's label as an example.

Ingredients List

We need to pay attention to the percentage of the following ingredients:

  • Wool: comes from sheep
  • Cashmere: comes from goats. It is finer, lighter, softer, and offers three times the insulating properties as sheep’s wool
  • Acrylic: a transparent thermoplastic homopolymer known more commonly by the trade name "plexiglass"
  • Polyester: a category of polymers that contain the ester functional group in every repeat unit of their main chain.

Boucle is made from a mixture of 70% polyester and 30% acrylic.

Therefore, if the main ingredients of a product are polyester and acrylic, then we can easily conclude that it is made from Boucle!

METHOD-2: BURN IT THEN SMELL

This part is fun. Just light a small piece of the fabric on fire and smell what happens when it burns.

Since the main ingredient of hair and wool are both proteins, the smell of burning wool is the same as the smell of burning hair!

If it smells like burning hair, it is Wool.

If it gives off a chemical odor, it is Boucle.

METHOD-3: LOOK AT IT UNDER THE MICROSCOPE

Wool's fibers are usually long and straight. If you look at a strand of wool under the microscope, it will look like a bundle of small hairs that are all connected at one end.

Boucle's fibers are shorter and curly. When viewed under the microscope, they look like tight coils with many smaller coils within them.
